Tolland Board of Education Revises School Calendar

The board authorized Superintendent of Schools William Guzman to reduce the academic school year by up to three days to accommodate additional school cancellations.

At the last Board of Education meeting, before more snow was forecast for this area, the board authorized Superintendent of Schools William Guzman to reduce the academic school year by up to three days to accommodate additional school cancellations.

Based on the board’s action, Guzman will be reducing the current student school year from 183 days to 182 days. The last day of school will remain Friday, June 21, and the April vacation period will remain as posted (April 15-19).

The option to further reduce the student school year down to 180 days will be considered should there be further school cancellations.

At this time, there have been nine school cancellations due to inclement weather. By adjusting the school calendar during the year, the district has been able to recover three of these nine days, leaving six days to be made up. Five of the six days will be made up by adding school days at the end of the year. The original last day of school was to be June 14.

Without the most recent calendar adjustment, one day of the April vacation would have to be converted into a school day or school would have to be pushed to June 24.

As it stands, the teachers will still work a day and the intention is to have them come in once school is out in June. A full day of professional development will be provided, which will cover the state mandated teacher evaluation program. Additionally, the teachers will have an opportunity to work relative to the common core state standards.

Guzman made his request due to the uncertainty of weather conditions for the remainder of the school year, and in an attempt to avoid disruption of family vacation plans for the April vacation period.
