Tolland Cross Country Sizes Up Against Rockville, Rocky Hill

The Tolland boys and girls cross country teams ran against the two competitors at Tolland High School on Tuesday.

The Tolland High School cross country teams had a strong meet against Rocky Hill and Rockville on Tuesday afternoon.

According to coach Judi Lafontaine, the girls defeated Rockville High School 18-50. Tolland freshman Courtney Akerly led the pack, winning the 3.1 mile race with a time of 22:14. Tolland senior and team captain Emily Howard came in second with the same time.

The rest of the top 10 were: 3. Shayla Shoeneberger (Rockville); 4. Tori Cronin (Tolland); 5. Katie Jacobs (Tolland); 6. Cristina Macklem (Tolland); 7. Rachel Gedansky (Tolland); 8.Melissa Caron (Tolland); 9. Gabrielle Hurlbut (Tolland); 10. Kayla Wesoly (Tolland).

The boys team had mixed results at Tuesday’s competition. According to coach Brandon Elliott, the Eagles had a close loss to Rocky Hill, 27-28, but shut out Rockville 15-50.

Rocky Hill runner Joe Crafa set a new course record with his winning time of 16:47. Tolland’s Matt Mensher came in second at 17:08, followed by James Wang with 17:15 (Rocky Hill), Colin Sauter at 17:24 (Tolland) and David Wang at 17:24 (Rocky Hill).

Elliott said that the Tolland team will have to show improvement to compete with Rocky Hill at the October bid for the CCC-East title.

The Tolland cross country teams will be competing next at the Ocean State Invitational on Saturday, September 24, according to the posted schedule.
