Area Athletes to Compete in Boys Track Championships This Week

Tolland boys are looking to make an impact; the state boys basketball tournament is also coming soon

The boys Class S indoor track championships are Thursday at Hillhouse High School in New Haven.

Tolland, which finished third in Class M last season, will send eight athletes to the Class M meet Saturday morning, but only Trevor Lafontaine qualified in multiple events. He qualified in the 1,600 meters, along with his brother Connor, and also in the 3,200.

Bryan Fowler and Matt Meshner also qualified in the 3,200. Nate Eichacker had qualifying times in the 600.

In the long jump, Austin Shelton and Benjamin Hutton qualified from Tolland.

Ellington, which finished 14th in the championships a year ago, had seven athletes qualify in 17 events. Cameron Waters qualified in four events, the 600 meters, 1,000, 1,600 and 3,200, which is a remarkable range.

Teammates David Bergeron and Alex Smith each qualified in three of the four events Waters reached. Bergeron had qualifying times in the 600, 1,000 and 1,600 while Smith reached in the 1,000, 1,600 and 3,200.

But being at State level at every distance from 600 to 3,200 is quite rare.

Ellington's Alex Oliwa also qualified in three events, the 55, 300 and 600.

Suffield will be at the Class M meet with seven athletes, including Connor Gates (1,000 and 1,600), DJ LaBarre (1,600 and 3,200) and Bruce Mackay (high jump and pole vault).

Tournament Approaches: The string of postponements that carved out the heart of basketball season had two edges for East Windsor. On one side, each snow day allowed time for injuries to seniors Josh Canning and Ryan Briggs to heal without costing the Panthers a game.

On the other side, those games need to be made up.

East Windsor, which has an outside chance at a state tournament berth will play eight games in the final 17 days of the season. The Panthers need to go 5-3 in that stretch to reach the tournament and while there are wins available there are also games against Windsor Locks, Suffield and Enfield.

The Panthers are not the only team facing a grueling stretch run with little margin for error.

East Catholic-Manchester, which is 4-9, has seven games in the final three weeks and Tolland, which has returned to the court after discipline-issues forced a forfeit to East Catholic, has eight games in 17 days to track down three wins.

Among the area teams already in the tournament are Enfield, Windsor, Manchester, Suffield, Somers, Windsor Locks, Cheney Tech and E.O. Smith. Ellington is one win away and will join this group shortly.
