Biking Through Rain and Sun

The riders in the Ashford Metric Century + biking event pushed through rain and sunshine for a great ride this Sunday.

It may not have been perfect biking weather, but the participants in the , organized by Nerac's Earth Cycling Club, still gathered to ride and raise money for the biking club and Ashford's Recreation Department last Sunday.

Tolland High School teacher and ski-enthusiast Nancy McGrath says that she bikes the annual event in order to crosstrain for her upcoming season. She said that she enjoyed the ride, but that her 65-mile course was altered a little bit this year, after making an incorrect turn at the course's first rest stop, leading her and another biker to create their "own course" for the ride.

Despite the unexpected course change, McGrath said that she takes on challenges like hills with a proven approach.

"I go as fast as I can for as long as I can for the big hills," she said, explaining that it's best to resist downshifting for as long as possible.

Manchester resident and biking fan Mike Lee said that he enjoys coming to Nerac's ride for the 65-mile course.

"It was a fun ride," he said. "I think they do a good job."

Nerac Earth Cycling Club member Jill Nugent said that approximately 148 people participated in Sunday's bike ride.
