Tolland Lacrosse Team Takes Nutmeg Gold

The team won all of its games in the tourney.

The Tolland girls Under-13 lacrosse squad took the gold medal recently at the Nutmeg State Games.

The team went undefeated during the tournament.

Tolland was led by Coach Carl Mahlstedt and Assistant Coach Kristin Braz.

The Tolland program is in just its fourth year and played against teams from well-established and respected programs.

The Nutmeg Games are touted as the largest amateur multi-sport event in Connecticut.

“Because girls’ lacrosse is still pretty new in Tolland, I think our athletes surprised many teams, including some elite travel programs that practice together year-round,” Mahlstedt said. “I think it really speaks to the character, camaraderie and sportsmanship of these girls, and we’re all so proud of them. They played well together as a true team today.”

The Tolland U13 team was comprised of nine Tolland residents, and one girl each from Ellington, Willington and Storrs. The team defeated the Dodgers Orange team 8-5 and the Crabs 11-5.

Tolland defeated Cheshire 9-7 in the championship game.

Tolland also fielded a strong U15 team for the Nutmeg State Games. Led by Coach Will Eggers and Assistant Coach Geoff Benjamin, the team won two out of three games and then advanced the bronze playoff game.

Tolland Girls Lacrosse offers multiple teams for girls in grades 3-8. The program is featuring upcoming clinics and a fall league for interested girls. Teams play once per week in the fall and welcome newcomers.
