Unified Sports Takes to the Lanes

The first-ever bowling event east of the river recently took place.

The Rockville Unified Sports chapter recently conducted its first bowling tournament at Spare Time in Vernon.

Residents of Vernon, Tolland and South Windsor participated.

The event marked the first bowling tournament to take place east of the of the river, organizers said. In all there were about 55 athletes and mentors participating.

Unified events stress sportsmanship, enjoyment, camaraderie and a good time.
The teams are hoping to encourage other bowling tournaments in the near future and incorporate other local schools.

Connecticut Special Olympics defines Unified Sports as a program that combines approximately equal numbers of individuals with (athletes) and without (partners) intellectual disabilities on the same sports teams for training and competition. All participants are of similar age and ability.
