Tolland Senior Center News

June 2013 TOLLAND SENIOR CENTER NEWS HI FOLKS: As I said in last month’s newsletter I will address our Variety Show. Wow!! It was so well attended; I think this attendance was the most we’ve seen to date! The acts were wonderful and it’s great to be able to pull in some talented people. Our thanks to all the performers. And thank you, seniors, for marketing ‘your’ show so well and bringing in friends and family - this has certainly become a community (and beyond) event and it’s a dream come true for me. How impressive it was to have the flag folding ceremony in the beginning of the show. I think many of us haven’t fully understood what each fold of the flag symbolized, and it was so interesting. The flag that was presented to us at the end of the ceremony has been framed and will be donated to the Wall of Honor. Thank you, Greg Forbush, for taking care of this. Our thanks to the two retired Marines folding the flag, and for their service, as well. Speaking of Veterans, I want to tell you of a program that has been booked for September. Our goal is to educate you, both Veterans and their families to what benefits are actually available. This will be open to the public so we can reach ALL veterans, and as the time nears, I will say more about this wonderful program being offered. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30 p.m. This will be an evening program so those that are still working can attend as well. As I sit here, a crew (five women, I might add) from Big Y is cleaning our Senior Center! This is the second year in a row they have volunteered their time to help us out. We all need some Spring cleaning occasionally, and they are scrubbing down our kitchen with a fervor, getting into the nooks and crannies that we, as seniors have difficulty doing as we age. Thank you, thank you, Big Y Supermarket employees! Our Painting Class is up and running again! Yay! Thanks to Heidi Ludwig, they will be meeting Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. If you like watercolor painting, and always wanted to learn how to paint, why not join the group. There’s some pretty amazing talent that’s hidden in some of you. On Friday, June 14th, Rebecca and I will be honoring all our consistent volunteers for all the hard work and time they put into making this place run smoothly. Please mark your calendars for this if you are one of our volunteers, and watch for your invitation in the mail. There are 3 seats left on the bus to see Sound of Music at the Westchester Dinner Theater. If you’re interested, please see me as soon as possible. Tickets are $90, $80 for Tolland Seniors. The full amount will be required at the time of sign up. Last but not least, Happy Father’s Day to all of you fathers out there! Exercise: Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. Tai Chi: I'm always out there looking for reasons on how Tai Chi can change your life for the better. If you're suffering from adrenal dysfunction, when your adrenals are fatigued, you must be careful to not overdue. Finding a gentle exercise regimen, like Tai Chi, that you can enjoy and are able to stick to can help your adrenal healing and rebalancing. When you're gently twisting at your waist, you are also massaging your internal organs. Also, just last week I was asked by the manager of the Hair Club for Men and Women for my business card to put into the packets that they give to their clients, because Tai Chi is one of the things that they recommend to relieve the stress that causes many people to loose hair.
