CitySingers to Perform at Music on the Green in Tolland

CitySingers of Hartford’s first performance ever in Eastern Connecticut will be at United Congregational Church of Tolland, 45 Tolland Green, on Sunday, December 8, 2013, at 3:30 p.m.

They will present Glad Tidings!, a joyous, festive concert that will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit.  In a season of celebration and goodwill, they bring Tidings of Joy in exhilarating arrangements accompanied by suspended bells, flute, oboe, harp, pipe organ and percussion – Tidings of Comfort in familiar carols from around the world, with an invitation for audience participation – and Tidings of Peace in motets from the 16th-20thcenturies that have uplifting and timeless messages. The program will include works by J. P. Sweelinck, Morten Lauridsen, JohnTavener and G. F. Handel, as well as choral settings of traditional Welsh, French, German and English carols.  A reception follows.

CitySingers is a chamber ensemble of vocal artists blending their voices into a carefully crafted instrument.  Established in 1982 under the patronage of the Trinity College Chapel, CitySingers of Hartford began as an enthusiastic group of friends who shared a love of singing.  In 1985, under the direction of Suzanne Gates, the ensemble expanded in size to 20 singers who represent a variety of professional and musical backgrounds and sing a broad repertoire encompassing a cappella and accompanied works of various styles, periods and cultures. Over the years, the ensemble has established a musical presence in Central Connecticut and has offered musical performances of special interest and unique character to audiences of different ages and musical tastes. This philosophy has led to collaborations with community organizations, musicians, dancers and composers that celebrate our musical heritage and explore the history and artistry of music for vocal ensemble.
