Tolland Student Collecting Recyclables for Veterans

Annalee Hughes is donating the money she raises to Ellington marine Greg Caron and The Wounded Warrior Project.

Tolland resident Annalee Hughes is dedicating her summer to a good cause. The eighth-grade student is collecting bottles and cans and donating the recycling proceeds to local veteran Greg Caron and the Wounded Warrior Project.

"They need our help," Hughes said of her inspiration to volunteer. "They saved our country. It's the most important thing."

To gather funds, Hughes has given a presentation on the importance of recycling at the . For the last two weeks she has been collecting cans and bottles and has already accumulated more than $15 to donate.

Half of the money Hughes collects will go to injured , while the other half will be donated to the general Wounded Warrior Project fund.

And while the recycling drive initially began as a summer project for Hughes, she said that she is enjoying it so much, she hopes to continue it into the school year.

"I'm never going to retire," she joked.
