It's about time. In my opinion the affirmative action ruling has destroyed the higher educationRead More system in this country, A college diploma is not worth the paper it's written on any longer. In the old days the cream was allowed to raise to the top as the saying goes and that way you insured that you had the best. That is what made this country and its educational system so good. Eventually the minorities would have been part of that cream and would become the best of the best.

2 observations: race in my opinion is not a disadvantage. poverty is. and poverty affects people ofRead More all colors--so colleges can take into account challenges in life--but being the son of michael jordan shouldnt grant him an easier admissions process simply because of skin pigmentation. 2) people also need to understand that the system in place does in fact result in diversity that we should all want. New Yrk Times about a year ago ran an article on peter stuyvesant high school--an elite school in manhattan that changed it admission policy to strictly merit. the result was 1 black student 95% asian. 1% hispanic 3 % white. Im not really sure that is a desirable outcome either. going to college is not just about attending bio 101. its interacting with a diverse student body that can also be considered an education. Colleges should not in my opinion adopt a strict meritocratic admissions process--- hardship , poverty, challenges should be considered. I get why people dont want racial preferences-- but i also get why people may regret what they wished for.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.

This is all about money and has nothing to do with what is good for our children's education - thatRead More is why it was crammed in quickly (many people still don't even know what it is) with the "carrot and stick" method. The carrot was the $4.3 billion of Race to the Top (taxpayer) money from the Federal Government and the stick was the waiver of the No Child Left Behind requirements. To learn more you can visit this Facebook page, which was made by some local parents: Northville MI Parents for Educational Excellence StopCommonCoreinMichigan is also a very helpful site. As people come to realize what this truly is (vs. what it was sold as, "minimum standards"), they are speaking up all over the country. By the way, tests that kids struggle with do not necessarily mena the material is harder and that the standards are better. Please read the tests - you will find politically charged questions, questions that are inapropriate for the children's age and confusing questions. The person that wrote above that the childen will lose in this way is absolutely correct.
Joe Sandiego April 23, 2014 at 01:13 am
The heart of the problem is the teachers union. The teachers are not doing a good enough jobRead More teaching and the kids are falling further behind. So we try to fix the problem with centralized standard, which will end up controlled by Washington. Politically correct, 1984 style, Ministry of Truth, will re-write revisionist history, and indoctrinate our youth. The problem is bad, and the fix is worse. We need to abolish teachers unions and abolish the US dept of education. Grant the parents school vouchers, and then let the parents and communities choose how to run their schools. Let the parents decide with their vouchers which schools are good. Let the cancerous schools die. Let the Phoenix rise from the ashes and build new schools free of unions and bureaucratic control.

Funny how Netflix is the "bad boy" yet those that offer more commercials than the movieRead More itself are just fine :) Cable today is pure garbage, a 2 hr movie will last half the night with all those commercials and since all sports from all countries, could be seen live over the internet...cable is obsolete. (as for news, please, you must be brain-dead to get your news from cable...with all of them all over you from second you start the computer to turn on the radio to even the second you "check" the e-mail on the phone. so Reuters don't worry about Netflix, worry about cable companies whose stocks should be worth a little more than half an ounce of dirt

I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. Here's more... FromRead More http://www.climate.gov/news-features/climate-qa/why-did-earth%E2%80%99s-surface-temperature-stop-rising-past-decade Why did Earth’s surface temperature stop rising in the past decade? The most likely explanation for the lack of significant warming at the Earth’s surface in the past decade or so is that natural climate cycles—a series of La Niña events and a negative phase of the lesser-known Pacific Decadal Oscillation—caused shifts in ocean circulation patterns that moved some excess heat into the deep ocean. Hmmmm... So much for your theory that the Earth has been warming for the last 140 years! You also say "It has had the most precipitous rate of warming in the past 40 years". No, sorry, not true again. You can't just make stuff up and expect that everyone will believe you.

The ICLEI site listed above is nothing more than ICLEI propaganda central. Among its goals:Read More combatting "climate change" based on the fraud of global warming. Beware whenever you read or hear the words "carbon footprint," or "climate protection." These are just U.N. sponsored buzzwords and efforts to intrude into matters of local control, property rights, and freedom. ironically, as globally-average temperatures have flatlined for the past 17 years, the U.N. has gotten more shrill in its predictions of "catastrophic global warming." Why? Because they're losing the debate and are afraid they won't have the rationale for global income redistribuition. At the heart of the global warming fraud is the notion that the mild (one-third of a degree Celsius) and brief (1978-1997) temperature rise we experienced was caused by carbon dioxide. This has never been more than a half-baked theory. In actuality, climate is controlled overwhelmingly by the sun and the earth's positionalrelationship to it playing out over geologic time, not short-term political cycles. Scientists are now coming to the realization that sun-induced cosmic rays and their effect on cloud cover may have a far greater impact on climatic variability. The primary reason CO2 was implicated, and supported by the environmental extremists, is that it can be used as an instrument of control. If it's the sun, we simply have to learn how to adapt. What's amazing is the amount of hyperbole that has been generated, and donations solicited by environmental groups on the basis of this fraudulent theory. We escaped a bullet a few years ago when the Senate refused to go along with Obama's "cap and trade" legislation, but not before CT's entire Congressional dlegation voted for the nonsense. Obama's own Treasury Dept. estimated the annual cost of "cap and trade" at $1,742 per family. Other studies projected the cost at $3,000, rising to $4,000 annually per family by 2032. And this all because of a one-third of a degree rise in globally averaged tempartures that had already stopped for 12 years by the time the House voted. Even now, Senators Murphy and Blumenthal are pushing the carbon dioxide fraud. Just further proof that liberalism is a mental disorder. Recently, Green guru and geophysicist James Lovelock, author of the Gaia hypothesis, and considered one of the pioneering scientists of the 20th century, officially turned his back on man-made global warming claims and the green movement’s focus on renewable energy. "Global warming" or "climate change"(the new term adopted because there has been no warming for 17 years) are the new religion, just as Lovelock says. Both the scientific community and the general public have awakened to the scam, the phenomenon of which speaks more to the human capacity for self-delusion than rational thought.

@Kendall - you're certainly entitled to your opinion, though the politicizing of science isRead More inherently dangerous. You make several statements that are misleading at best, and I suspect that politicization of the issue has clouded your rational thought as well. I don't expect you to agree with me - or thousands of scientists - because your mind is set on believing that the vast majority of the scientific community is of a liberal leaning, money grabbing bent. You know that "conservative" scientists also work on the issue and agree with the climate change/warming consensus? Anyway, for anyone still reading, take time to inform yourself and try to remove ALL politics from your understanding of science. National Geographic does a great job in its online coverage of the issue, including this: http://energyblog.nationalgeographic.com/2010/12/21/climate-change-myth/ (In partnership with Shell Oil, lest anyone claim it's a liberal anti-business agenda).
